The tinting was well placed considering the size of the photograph. This was only a 9th plate, and her face covers an area about the size of a dime. Even with such a small image, the quality of the ambrotype process and the execution by the photographer gave us great detail.
When examined closely, her larger collar is black, but there is some lace or a necklace that was actually tinted red. In addition, a small brooch or pin in the middle of the collar is gilt, as are her earrings. |
The writing on the inside of the case reads:
Received
Christmas day 1858
60 1858
Dec 25th, 1858
This was probably updated a couple times. The very first entry was not planned well, and there was barely room for 1858. We believe 1858 was written again immediately as it looks the same. The meaning of "60" is unknown. |
