Women's Dresses
A profound change in women's dresses, in particular the shoulders and sleeves, began in 1889.
Previously, the sleeves were very tight to the arm and the shoulders were rounded, fitting snuggly.
In about 1889 the first of shoulder growth appeared with 'points' protruding upward at the edge of the shoulder. The woman in front on left and the one in back on right wear perfect examples of this new style.
As students of 1890s fashion know, it was not long until the shoulders became even larger, almost balloon-like, and the sleeves became very large as well.
Man's Fashion
The upturned collar and thick tie are found frequently in 1890 photographs. Numerous examples can be seen here.

Card Stock
This mount is a very smooth, white enameled card stock. The back includes simple artwork which contrasted with the complex full-back designs used up to this point.
Front Imprint
The studio name and location are imprinted with gilt foil stamping. In addition, a monogram of the photographers initials is centered on the front. These monograms became very popular at the time. See some examples in the gallery.
Back Imprint
This is an unusual treatment of the back. It is simply the studio monogram, shown much smaller on the front of the card.
