Recently acquired, this mid-1890s small card photograph was intriguing to PhotoTree for several reasons.
- Except for the faded photograph image, the card and photo is in excellent shape.
- The image had nearly faded away, as the image below shows. This became a challenge to us.
- While it was not dated, we have in the PhotoTree collection several like photographs, with the exact scalloped pattern A couple of them are dated.
Always Keep Damaged Photos
Even if some of your photographs seem to be lost to time, do not discard them. Many people, include PhotoTree.com, can many times bring them back to life.
Comparing Your Images to Others
The basis for PhotoTree's dating methods includes comparing the photo in question with a vast database of similar, yet dated photographs.
We were actually amazed to see the patterned edge cuts be identical to a couple cards in our collection. Look at the comparison below (though the wear is different), and you will see the identical pattern shapes in the die-cut edges. This card was obviously from the same card manufacturer.
Since card shapes and styles changed so often, it is fair to say the two photographs were from the same general time frame. And the picture of the two young ladies was dated 1894. Their clothes support the date also.
