Long Version of Story - Prior to attending the National Genealogy Society (NGS) meeting in Cincinnati in 2012, I did some ancestral research in southern Indiana. Looking to add to my collection of oval framed enlargements, I stopped in a couple antique stores in Madison, IN. To make a long story short, I found a great 1890s oval picture with curved glass. It was about $125. In good condition, but not rare.
One store later, I spotted this photograph (as I was leaving), it was only $15.00. In good condition, but very rustic looking, I did not hesitate to buy it. As mentioned above, I didn't realize what a treasure I had. Monetarily it is not a great treasure, though it is a rare example of early enlargements. It was certainly worth $15. This is most likely a mid-1860s salt print.
The only moral to this story is to keep looking. A little luck mixed in with tenacity never hurts. |
